Important: General Overview, Not Immigration Advice

UAE immigration law and visa regulations are subject to change. Eligibility criteria, fees, processing times and document requirements may be updated by the Federal Authority for Identity, Customs and Port Security (ICP), GDRFA Dubai, or other competent authorities. This article provides a general educational overview as of July 2026. Always verify current requirements on the official portals linked throughout this guide. Octopus BFCO coordinates visa applications with licensed immigration specialists where required.

The UAE Visa Landscape

The UAE's visa system was comprehensively reformed in 2022 with the introduction of the Federal Decree-Law on Entry and Residence of Foreigners. The reform created new self-sponsored long-term visas — the Green Visa and the expanded Golden Visa — alongside the traditional employer-sponsored employment visa.

Today, a foreign national can obtain UAE residency through employment, self-sponsorship (Green Visa), long-term investment (Golden Visa), property ownership, retirement, remote work for a foreign employer, family sponsorship or study. Each path has different requirements, durations and privileges.

The key distinction is sponsorship. Traditional visas require a sponsor — an employer, family member or property. The newer self-sponsored visas (Green, Golden, Retirement, Virtual Work) allow a foreign national to hold UAE residency independently, without being tied to an employer.

This guide is organised by visa type, from short-term visit permits to long-term residency. Each section links to the official authority portal where applications are submitted.

Key Concepts

Understanding the Fundamentals

Regardless of visa type, certain concepts apply to all UAE residence visas. Understanding these helps avoid common pitfalls.

Sponsorship

Most traditional UAE visas require a sponsor — an employer, a family member, a company or a property. The sponsor is legally responsible for the visa holder during their stay. Self-sponsored visas (Green, Golden, Retirement, Virtual Work) do not require an employer or individual sponsor.

Emirates ID

All UAE residents receive an Emirates Identity Card upon visa issuance. It is mandatory for all government services, banking, healthcare, telecoms and most official transactions. The Emirates ID is linked to the residence visa validity.

Medical Fitness Test

All residence visa applicants over age 18 must undergo a medical fitness test (blood test for communicable diseases and chest X-ray). The test is conducted at approved medical centres and the result is transmitted to the immigration authority electronically.

Health Insurance

Health insurance is mandatory in most emirates. Dubai requires the sponsor to provide health insurance for the visa holder and dependents. Abu Dhabi requires employer-sponsored coverage. All visit visa holders must have valid travel/health insurance.

Grace Period

If a residence visa is cancelled or expires, the holder has a grace period (typically 30 days for standard visas, longer for Golden/Green) to either transfer to a new visa or leave the country. Overstaying beyond the grace period incurs daily fines.

Six-Month Rule

Standard residence visa holders must not stay outside the UAE for more than 6 consecutive months, or the visa may be cancelled. Golden Visa holders are exempt from this rule and can stay abroad for extended periods without losing residency.
